SCHOOLS AND ZONES IN NEW ZEALAND

Did you know that public schools in New Zealand arrange their intake of students in a “zoning” system?

This means that only families that live within a specific area, or specific streets and blocks surrounding a school may enrol their children in that school.  This is in general terms, some schools will consider intake from other individual students in some instances.

As this is such an essential part of your decision when moving country (if you have children), we have provided you the following information and links to give you the necessary tools to make the most informed decision about schools and zones in New Zealand.

The Ministry of Education’s website on School Zones is very helpful and gives you search fields to enter in two possible options.

Following this website’s search fields, will give you all the information that you need to know about what schools are in a specific area, and what each school’s zone (address of housing) includes.

To find out more about each school, you may click on View School location (to view their map and zoned addresses).  You may also click on the school website link to view their website and gather information on that particular school.

In addition, the New Zealand Education Review Office, conduct a review on each public school in New Zealand every three years.  You may view the latest review for each school by clicking on the New Zealand Education Review Office website.

ENGLISH ESL SCHOOLS

If you or a family member would like to learn English as a second language, this information will assist you in finding out valuable information about ESL schools in New Zealand and where they’re located.

The Southern Institute of Technology (”SIT”) is a tertiary education provider offering a ZERO FEES scheme for all permanent residents and citizens of New Zealand.  SIT offers degrees, diplomas and certificate courses, in a wide range of qualifications, on campus in Invercargill and Christchurch, as well as by correspondence.  SIT offer FREE English as a second language programmes (for permanent residents and citizens of New Zealand) on campus and by correspondence.  Please visit their website SIT English Programmes to source more information these courses.

TERTIARY EDUCATION

There are various Tertiary Education providers throughout New Zealand.  To source institute providers, and courses available, please visit the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (”NZQA”) Tertiary Education Providers section on their website.   Their website provides search fields for searching tertiary institutions, by location, or by topic criteria.  The lists are comprehensive of all NZQA recognised teaching institutions across New Zealand, from schools through to universities.

OVERSEAS ASSESSMENT OF QUALIFICATIONS

Do you have a tertiary qualification obtained from a foreign country?

If so, you may find it assists you with securing work in New Zealand to have an assessment of this qualification completed, to allow New Zealand employers to determine what your qualification is comparable to in New Zealand.
